How Do You Get to Hakuba from Tokyo, Narita or Haneda? Train and Bus Routes from the Operators' Own Pages
This guide is for first-time visitors who land at Narita or Haneda, or start in central Tokyo, and need to reach Hakuba Village in Nagano. It compares the three public transport routes: the Hokuriku Shinkansen plus a bus from Nagano, the JR line through Matsumoto, and the direct express bus from Shinjuku.
Everything here comes from pages run by the operators themselves: JR East, Alpico, the two Tokyo airports, Hakuba Village and the Hakuba Valley Promotion Board. We read them on 3 October 2026. Timetables in this area change by season, so treat every time and fare below as a snapshot and check the operator page before you travel.
The three routes at a glance
- Shinkansen and bus: Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Nagano, then an Alpico express bus to Hakuba. The Hakuba Valley site says this takes as little as 2 hours 50 minutes.
- JR via Matsumoto: the Limited Express Azusa from Shinjuku. One train a day runs through to Hakuba Station on the JR Oito Line. Other trips need a change to a local train.
- Express bus from Shinjuku: a direct highway bus from the Busta Shinjuku terminal to the Hakuba area, run jointly by Alpico and Keio.
The direct airport buses to Hakuba have not run for the last two winters, as explained below. So from either airport, plan to travel into central Tokyo first.
From Narita or Haneda into Tokyo
Narita Airport's rail page shows the Narita Express calling at both Tokyo Station and Shinjuku Station. Tokyo Station is where the Hokuriku Shinkansen starts. Shinjuku is where the Azusa train and the Hakuba express bus leave from.
Haneda Airport's official page says the airport is directly connected to the Keikyu Line and the Tokyo Monorail. It lists travel times to Tokyo, Hamamatsucho and Shinagawa stations. It asks you to check each rail company for schedules and fares.
Alpico runs pages for direct Narita–Hakuba and Haneda–Hakuba buses. Both pages say these were winter-only services. They also say there was no service in the 2024–25 winter or the 2025–26 winter. When we checked, neither page gave any plan for the 2026–27 winter. Do not count on a direct airport bus unless Alpico confirms one.
Route 1: Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano, then the bus
JR East's timetable for Nagano Station lists Hokuriku Shinkansen trains toward Omiya and Tokyo, so this leg is a simple ride. At Nagano you change to the Alpico express bus to Hakuba.
Alpico's green-season page for this bus covers 1 April to 30 November 2026. It says the December timetable will be posted once it is final. Key points from that page:
- In the green season you cannot reserve a seat or buy a ticket in advance. Tickets are sold on the day only, and boarding is first come, first served.
- A ticket bought for this line is valid on any of its buses that day. Extra buses are added at busy times.
- The bus has no toilet and makes no rest stop. Plan for that before you board.
- There is no limit on the number or size of suitcases in the luggage hold.
- One-way adult fares from Nagano Station were 2,900 yen in the green season and 3,500 yen in winter to most Hakuba stops. These include Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal and Hakuba Station. Tsugaike Kogen and Hakuba Norikura cost 3,200 yen in the green season and 3,800 yen in winter.
- Children aged 1 to 12 pay half the adult fare. If you board where there is no ticket counter, you can pay the driver in cash or with a contactless Visa card.
Alpico's winter page describes two kinds of bus. Non-reserved buses sell same-day tickets only, and most run straight between Happo Bus Terminal and Nagano Station. Reservation-only buses have one bus per departure and no extras. That page still described the 2025–26 season when we read it, so expect changes for 2026–27.
Route 2: Limited Express Azusa and the JR Oito Line
JR East's October 2026 timetable shows one Azusa running the whole way. Azusa 5 left Shinjuku at 08:00, called at Matsumoto at 10:37 and reached Hakuba at 11:40. In the other direction, Azusa 38 left Hakuba at 13:43 and reached Shinjuku at 17:26.
The train page says all seats in the ordinary cars can be reserved. With a ticket that has no seat assigned, you can also use any empty seat. The Green Car seats are reserved.
If your Azusa ends at Matsumoto, change to the Oito Line there. On the October 2026 weekday timetable at Matsumoto, most Oito Line trains ran only to Shinano-Omachi or a nearer station. Apart from the Azusa, only two local trains a day ran through Hakuba to Minami-Otari. So you will often need a second change at Shinano-Omachi.
JR East also lists a night train, the Limited Express Alps. It left Shinjuku at 23:58 and reached Hakuba at 05:50. The timetable marks it as a train that does not run every day.
Hakuba Village publishes a separate notice about extra buses on the northern part of the Oito Line. They run between Itoigawa Station and Hakuba Station in August, October and December 2026 to March 2027, three round trips a day. The fare is the same as the train, and train tickets are accepted. The village says the winter timetable will change.
Route 3: the express bus from Shinjuku
Alpico and Keio Bus run this service jointly from Busta Shinjuku. Its main stops include Shinano Omachi Station, Hakuba Goryu, Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal and Tsugaike Kogen.
- The timetable we read covers 1 April to 4 December 2026. A separate winter page exists.
- Seats open for online booking one month before the travel date. Alpico does not take bookings by phone or email. If seats are left on the day, you can buy at a ticket counter.
- One-way adult fares were listed as 5,800 to 9,000 yen. There is no return fare.
- Luggage rules differ by operator. On Alpico daytime buses, the company strongly recommends two items at most. On Alpico overnight buses, skis, snowboards and bicycles are not allowed. Keio accepts one suitcase or one pair of skis per person, and a second item only if there is space.
The ticket counter at Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal was listed as open 8:00 to 17:00. Alpico notes that it does not run that terminal, so hours can change.
If you plan to drive
Hakuba Village warns that snow and ice change road conditions in winter. It says drivers should watch out for visitors from abroad who are not used to driving in Japan. The village has made an English leaflet called Winter Season Driving Rules for these drivers.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- Hokuriku Shinkansen journey times and fares between Tokyo and Nagano. We only quote the Hakuba Valley total of 2 hours 50 minutes for the full trip.
- Narita Express and Haneda rail fares and times. The JR East Narita Express page refused our request, and the airport pages send readers to the rail companies.
- Exact bus departure times between Nagano and Hakuba, and between Shinjuku and Hakuba. The timetable tables on Alpico's pages did not load in our copy.
- Whether the Narita and Haneda airport buses will run in the 2026–27 winter.
- Rail passes, taxi fares and private transfer services.
