How Do You Get Around Hakuba Valley Without a Car in Winter? Valley Shuttle, Night Bus and Resort Buses
This guide is for winter visitors who want to move around Hakuba Valley without a car. It covers the valley shuttle that links the ski resorts, the night bus and the free buses that individual resorts run. It also covers the local bus between Hakuba Station and Tsugaike Kogen, and an extra bus on the JR Oito Line corridor.
Everything here comes from official pages: the Hakuba Valley Promotion Board, the bus operator Alpico, and Hakuba Village. We read them on 4 October 2026. At that point the shuttle pages still showed the 2025–26 winter. Timetables for 2026–27 had not been posted, so treat the details below as last season's pattern and check again before you travel.
Four kinds of bus to know
- Line V, the Hakuba Valley Shuttle Bus. A paid shuttle that stops at all ten ski resorts in the valley.
- Line VN, the Hakuba Night Bus. A paid evening service with its own timetable.
- Ski resort shuttle buses. Free lines run by the resorts themselves, each serving one or two resorts.
- Local and rail-replacement buses. The Alpico bus between Hakuba Station and Tsugaike Kogen, and the extra bus that runs alongside the JR Oito Line.
The Promotion Board's shuttle page lists, resort by resort, which lines stop there. Its overall route map and timetable are published as PDFs on the same page.
Line V: the valley shuttle
Line V is the one bus line that stops at every resort. Last season, the adult fare was 800 yen and the child fare 400 yen.
- Tickets are sold online only. The English page says there is no cash payment. Card brands, PayPay, Google Pay and Apple Pay are accepted.
- The Japanese page adds one exception. In an emergency, the driver can take cash on board, but the fare is then 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for children.
- Holders of a Hakuba Valley All-Mountain Season Pass or Day Pass ride free.
There is a catch with the Day Pass. It is valid on the bus only on a day you use a ski resort. If you ride the shuttle without skiing, that still counts as one day of the pass. With a ticket charged online, start using it at a resort, not on the bus. Otherwise the bus ride alone may be counted as a full day.
The page also lists separate timetables for 13 to 23 December and for two periods in March. Check which one applies to your dates.
Line VN: the Hakuba Night Bus
The night bus runs on its own timetable, shown on the same page. Last season, the adult fare was 500 yen and the child fare 250 yen. Unlike Line V, you can pay in cash as well as with an online ticket.
The Japanese page notes that you can search both Line V and the night bus in Google Maps in real time. The page links to instructions.
Free shuttles run by the ski resorts
Most resorts also run their own free buses. The Promotion Board names ten of these lines, lettered N, T, I, E, H, F, G, L, R and O. Each goes to one resort, or links two.
These buses work differently from Line V, according to the Japanese page:
- They are run by the resorts, so as a rule you can only ride to or from that resort. You cannot change between lines.
- In the morning they run only towards the resort, and in the afternoon only away from it. Runs H1, H2, L1 and a few others are the exceptions.
- Some stops are for boarding only and some for getting off only. The timetable marks which.
In practice, these lines suit a trip from your lodging area to one resort and back. To reach a different resort, use Line V.
The local bus between Hakuba Station and Tsugaike Kogen
Alpico runs a year-round local bus between Tsugaike Kogen and Hakuba Station, via Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal. Its page shows the April to November 2026 timetable. For winter, it sends readers to the Hakuba Valley shuttle bus page.
- Adult fares: 180 yen between Happo Bus Terminal and Hakuba Station, 530 yen between Happo and Tsugaike Kogen, and 570 yen between Hakuba Station and Tsugaike Kogen.
- Only one-way tickets are sold. There is no return fare.
- Seats cannot be reserved. Buy a ticket from the machine inside Happo Bus Terminal, or pay the driver when you board elsewhere. Both are cash only.
- Children aged 7 to 12 pay half. One child aged 1 to 6 rides free with each adult.
- Suitcases are allowed, with no limit on number or size.
The extra bus on the JR Oito Line corridor
Hakuba Village publishes details of an extra bus between Itoigawa Station and Hakuba Station. It is run with JR West to bring more visitors to the Oito Line area. In fiscal 2026 it runs in August, October, and December 2026 to March 2027. There are three round trips a day, and the village says the winter timetable is due to change.
- It stops at Itoigawa, Nechi, Kita-Otari, Minami-Otari, Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal and Hakuba. The Kita-Otari stop is at the Otari roadside station, about 750 metres from the train station.
- Use an ordinary JR ticket or pass. The fare is the same as the train, and no booking is needed.
- At Happo Bus Terminal, buses from Itoigawa only let passengers off, and buses from Hakuba Station only pick up.
- You cannot use it just between Hakuba Station and Happo Bus Terminal.
- It does not connect with trains. If it is full, take the next train or bus.
Crowds, and if you do drive
The Promotion Board warns that buses can be very crowded after heavy snow. A full Line V bus will not take more passengers. Late-afternoon buses, and the last bus of the day above all, are busiest, so it advises getting to the stop early. Timetables and routes can change without notice.
If you still plan to drive, Hakuba Village's winter rules ask for snow tyres and recommend four-wheel drive. Many streets become one-way in winter. Parking is not allowed on the street or at bus terminals, because it blocks snow clearing and emergency vehicles. Clear the snow off your car before you set off.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- Timetables, fares and start dates for the 2026–27 winter. None had been published when we checked.
- Departure times and stops for Line V and the night bus. The timetables are images and PDFs that we did not transcribe line by line.
- The detailed timetable of the Oito Line extra bus. The village's PDF is an image we could not read reliably.
- Taxi and ride-hailing services in the valley. We found no official page that lists them.
